All of us probably know that we should not go to a job interview dressed in sweatpants (even though a Czech recruiter has recently lamented the case of a candidate showing up in sweatpants in a discussion on the LinkedIn network). We also feel that there is a difference between applying for a job in a law or financial company and applying at an internet company or factory. However, there is no such thing as overdressing for an interview.
"During my 30 years as a hiring manager and candidate, I have never heard an interviewer complain that they came in too nicely dressed," says HR consultant Dana Manciagli in her recent article about dressing for job interviews published on LinkedIn. She pointed out the following mistakes that can cost you your dream job. Let's start with men.
Leave your plaid jacket at home
The suit a man wears for a job interview should not be of a bold color and it should not be decorated with any patterns that stand out, including stripes and checks. Although it may seem boring, stick to dark colors like black, blue or grey. Choose your trousers accordingly. Do not wear jeans at all. Regarding the material of the suit, again, choose a classic. Suede or leather are not appropriate. And definitely do not wear anything which is too small or too large for you.
No tight T-shirts, please
T-shirts, or even sleeveless T-shirts, are not suitable for job interviews. You should always wear a shirt with a collar and long sleeves under your jacket. Needless to say, the shirt should fit you well, you should at least be able to button it at the neck. Again, do not wear any patterns that stand out. When choosing a tie, avoid any political or religious motifs, sports symbols, or cartoon characters.
Beware of white socks
Never go to an interview without socks. In addition, be careful not to wear socks that are too short. Keep in mind that your socks will be visible when you sit down. The height of your socks should be sufficient to cover the visible part of your leg. As far as colors - all light colors are off limits. Do not wear socks with bold patterns or writing on them either.
Wear sandals on the beach
When it comes to choosing shoes for a job interview, there is no room for experimentation here either. Any sports shoes, including crocs and flip-flops, are inappropriate. Put on dark shoes made of leather or similar material with laces. Patent-leather shoes are, however, too much. As far as jewelry, a watch and wedding ring is enough.
