20 tips to boost your HR career in 2012

The time of New Year's resolutions including career goals for the coming year is here again. To really boost and move your HR career to a next level, you should, however, not set too vague or weak goals.

Alan Collins, the former HR Director of PepsiCo and author of books concerning HR,  advises twenty really practical goals that can help you advance in your profession. He published the goals on successinhr.com. Choose two or three of them and invest your time and effort in achieving them.

  1. Get 20 recommendations on LinkedIn.

  2. Publish three articles in a professional magazine or on the Internet.

  3. Write your own book on HR.

  4. Write your own study concerning your HR specialization and set a goal to get it downloaded by 500 people.

  5. Make a speech at a HR conference.

  6. Read a book by Allan Collins Unwritten HR Rules  and choose two of the action steps outlined in it.

  7. Set up a blog focusing on HR.

  8. Set up your own group on LinkedIn.

  9. Organize a lecture or teach HR at a local university.

  10. Hold informal lectures about your experinece for your colleagues.

  11. Coach and run training for internal trainers.

  12. Become a member of a local HR association.

  13. Create your account on Twitter and get 500 meaningful followers.

  14. Create your own HR application for the iPhone.

  15. Start to manage your HR department as a profit center.

  16. Get certified in the field of HR.

  17. Become a HR expert for the media.

  18. Create a series of videos for YouTube to present your HR experience.

  19. Contribute regularly to your company newsletter.

  20. Clearly define what differentiates you from other HR professionals.
