Four tips on retaining top employees

Retaining top employees is a key task of management and the HR department. A general rule says that most of the income of any company comes from the work of just a small per cent of the most effective workers. Thus you must be able to detect these employees and pay sufficient attention to them, so they are not lured away by your competitors. Unfortunately, in the case of such people, money does not play the only role in their decisions, which is why you need to know also other, non-financial ways to retain them in the long run.

Tip no. 1: Praise for specific successes

According to HR Morning, people still underestimate simple praise from a boss or a representative of management. Such praise must not be just general, but should specifically describe a concrete success that the given employee has achieved.

Tip no. 2: Recognition in front of others

Praise and recognition should take place also publicly, not just in private between manager and employee. No matter what anybody says, we are all a little bit egoistic, and we are happy if our qualities are recognised publicly. A quality employee should therefore be praised publicly and held up as a role model.

Tip no. 3: Expansion of authority

Successful and ambitious workers often seek expansion of their power. If there is no room for giving them a raise, there is certainly at least a way to expand their power and let them work more independently so they will sense a certain progress in their job.

Tip no. 4: Consultations about further development

Top workers should also be seen as certain opinion leaders and their insights and ideas should be taken into account. Engage the employees whom you value, include them in the decision-making processes at your company, listen to their ideas and give them the opportunity to influence the company more.
