Coaching as a way to self and others

Anna Crkalová, Managing Consultant, Coaching Systems s.r.o.

Most misunderstandings in communication, work situations or relationships rise from a misunderstanding of the differences between people. It is, therefore, useful for people to know their own personality type as well as the personality types of the people around them. An example of a methodology that verifies personality patterns and the ways how they influence human behaviour is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI ®).

The MBTI methodology is based on the research of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung and his followers Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. It works with a personality questionnaire, self-assessment and consultations with an expert. It describes differences between people in the following areas:

• Where do we focus our attention and whrere do we take our energy from?

(E - extraversion) or  (I - Introversion)

• How do we process information?

(S - Sensing) or  (N - Intuition)

• How do we decide?

(T - Thinking) or (F - Feeling)

• How do we deal with the outside world and to what extent do we tend to organize things?

(J - Judging) or (P - Perceiving)

The methodology differentiates 16 personality types expressed in four-letter codes - such as ESFP, INTP, etc. It is important to understand that none of the variants is better or worse.

Do you want to know how MBTI can be used in coaching? Anna Crkalová, trainer and coach of the Academy of Coaching Excellence within the Czech company Coaching Systems, desribed the use of MBTI ® in coaching in her article on HRNews.cz.
