Organizations with advanced strategies for managing employees with high potential (so-called high-potentials) are 12 times more effective in improving business performance than others. In addition, they can also better retain key leaders, ensure employee succession and address global business needs. These are results of the The Art and Science of Building a High-Potential Strategy study by Bersin & Associates which aimed to gather best practices in high potential talent management.  295 managers responsible for managing talent in four global regions participated in the study.

Organizations that achieve business success through advanced high potential talent management strategies, have the following characteristics in common.

  • Organization-wide systematic process of identifying and developing high-potential leaders that differentiates the current performance, long-term potential and readiness to perform tasks at a higher level

  • long-term planning (at least two years in advance) for filling critical positions and anticipating talent needs and requirements for each position,

  • application of established criteria for the identification, measurement, selection and hiring high-potential talents

  • organization-wide consistent implementation of targeted, individualized development plans including coaching, mentoring, action learning etc., depending on the organization's business needs

  • supporting talent through career movement and advancement,

  • full commitment of top management to the development of high-potential talents

  • monitoring and evaluating the impact of the development of high-potential talents on company's business results.
