How to help managers deliver bad news

Developing managers is a key prerequisite for successful work of HR business partners. A big challenge is for example to teach managers how to effectively deliver sensitive or negative messages to employees.

Managers often have to convey official statements regarding changes to their people while they themselves are not fully aware of the whole context or they do not even support it. Despite the effort to choose the best solution for the company and do not demotivate employees they often end with suggesting a solution that seems the best only to them personally. That is the point where the HR business partner should step in with his managerial support. He can ensure the best support when he:

  • anticipates the managers' pont of view before the message gets out,

  • talks with managers about the reasons and the broader context of the messages to be delivered,

  • delivers the message to the managers in a way that will satisfy their needs and help them make it in the same way with their subordinates,

  • creates and maintains effective communication plans to help managers communicate with subordinates. To start, a simple list of points will help.
