Negotiation fundamentals for HR people

HR staff need to be able to negotiate well to convince management of their companies to invest in human resources. They also need to be able to negotiate well with managers of individual departments and teams to show them more effective ways of managing people and help them by providing tools that were previously not available within the company. To be successful negotiators, follow the procedures below.

Concentrate on the first five minutes

Start pleasantly and positively. If you want the negotiation to go well for you, adapt to the emotional state and voice of the other party at the very beginning of the discussion. When you cannot engage the participants at the beginning, your folowing actions will be a waste of time.

Start with higher requirements than you need

All other negotiations will be based on what you say at the beginning. Nobody else but you knows that you want more than you need. The other party can only assume it.

Present your arguments first

When you talk first, all further negotiations will depend on what you said. You will therefore get the advantage and the position of a confident negotiator.

Show your enthusiasm

Smile to indicate your acceptance and contentment. If you do not like something, do not hide it. Show that you care about the issue being discussed and that you stand behind what you say.

Have a cup of coffee

Coffee soothes your emotions and you will therefore less likely to start verbal clashes.

Emphasize that there is not too much time left

The more you can show that certain things will soon change in the way you think, the greater the interest of the other party will be.

Provide as much data as possible

If you want to convince, support your arguments with as much evidence as possible. In this case, quantity is more important than quality.
