Empowering of employees as a path towards improved work efficiency

Many managers with authoritarian tendencies mistakenly assume they can achieve efficiency of work of team members through micro-management and the clearest and most detailed instructions possible being given to individual workers. This system, however, does not take into consideration the specifics of individual employees and their motivation to work "on their own", which is why the system doesn't function. The key to improved efficiency of work is not more detailed instructions and rules but, on the contrary, more empowered regular employees.

The ability proactively to solve one's needs

According to Training Zone, more empowering of employees is a way to ensure these employees will then be able proactively to solve their needs and requirements without being limited by what their manager dictates. The problem is that no one can completely avoid a subjective bias in the way they view a given situation. So every manager gives team members instructions based on how they themselves see the situation, leaving no room for the employees themselves to deal with matters using tools that are close to them and correspond to their attitude and personality. By having more power, employees can decide on their own about these things and thus find ideal solutions.

Setting up of general rules

There is an old saying that if you catch a fish for someone, you feed them for one day, but if you teach them to catch fish, you feed them for life. If managers try to micro-manage their employees, they will always have to set up new rules and procedures for individual cases that the employees encounter. It is much more effective and logical to establish a general set of rules and teach regular employees to work within this system so they can refer to it in specific situations concerning what to do and what they should achieve based on the expectations and priorities of the company.

Trust and personal accountability

Of course, the above-mentioned systems require a certain trust of management towards employees. When power is transferred, some responsibility is taken away from managers and given to individual employees. Not everyone seeks more power and it is always necessary to consult personally with employees the parameters of empowering individuals, ensuring they understand what more power means for them and that they are willing to accept more accountability for their deeds and also potential mistakes.
