Two laws of HR which are valid everywhere

Human resources management varies considerably in different parts of the world. Whether it be laws and other regulatory measures, overall business culture or local practices, what works in one place definitely need not work elsewhere. Differences occur not only in different countries but also in different companies. It is simply impossible to apply a uniform approach when managing people.

This reasoning is the basis of a recent article by Hank Jackson, president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The author reveals that, despite all the differences, two facts in HR are universal - or at least HR directors from 17 countries agreed on them at a World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA) conference in Paris. Which strategic prerequisites for success are they?

1. Knowledge of business

HR professionals must understand their organisation's business strategy and vision for the future. To contribute to achieving the strategic business plan, they must know how the company wants to achieve its vision. This is the core competence of HR.

2. Subsequent creation of people management strategies

Only after HR understands the business strategy, can its own strategy be created. First you must clarify all questions regarding the further development of business. Does your company want to enter new markets? Do you want to come up with a new product or improve customer service? No matter what your business goal, it is precisely on this that your people management strategy must be based.
