How to restart your career after maternity leave? Try the Internet

You left your career in order to raise children. Now you would like to start working again, but you find that your CV ends several years ago. You can add only breastfeeding, changing nappies and preparing your children to enter kindergarten or school. While this is undoubtedly a very demanding job, employers will probably not be over-impressed. So how you can restart your career after the parental break? Careerealism.com recommends using opportunities offered by the Internet.

Start writing a blog

This will help you show potential employers you have mastered not only information technologies but also organisational skills. Once your blog becomes popular, you may receive job offers or at least advertisers who would like to pay for ads on your website. The topic of your blog does not have to be work-related: the important thing is that it must be professionally managed. Besides content, this also means an ability to promote the blog and create a community of readers. You can find inspiration in our earlier articles about successful blogs or using blogs to promote start-ups.

Learn to use social networks and mobile devices

During your maternity leave, you probably communicated with other mothers via Facebook. So take advantage of this knowledge and become a social media expert. Such experts are in great demand today. Start learning how to use Facebook and also Twitter, Google+ and other social networks for marketing and sales. A number of recommendations can be found e.g. in the Social networks section of Salesnews.cz. Mobile devices, i.e. mobile phones and tablets, have great potential in marketing as well. Learn to use mobile platforms, such as the geolocation service Google Places, for business purposes. More inspiration can be found here.

Educate yourself

Your CV will look much better if it shows you educated yourself during your maternity leave. There are various ways to learn on the Internet, often free of charge. Some of them were described e.g. by our colleague Tomas Dvořák in his recent article entitled Where to learn online? Managers and HR professionals may be interested in selflearning.cz.
